Xoloitzcuintli (Mexican Hairless)

The Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced “show-low-eats-QUEENT-lee”), often called the Mexican Hairless Dog or just Xolo, is one of the oldest recognized breeds in existence, believed to have been around since 3000 B.C. They are often seen as a symbol of good health in Mexico, due to their purported ability to heal humans spiritually and physically. The Xolo comes in three sizes – Toy, Miniature, and Standard – and two hair varieties: coated or hairless. Xolos usually weigh between 10–50 lbs., depending on their size, and have strong protective instincts towards their owners.

Xiasi Dog

Also known as the Xiashanquan (Chinese Scenthound), this medium-sized hunting dog was developed during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE). Highly prized for their scenting abilities and stamina, these lovable canines make great companion animals too. Typically weighing between 25–45 lbs., the Xiasi has short fur that comes in several colors, including white, fawn, yellow, red and black & tan. Their ears are large and hang low, allowing them to pick up even faint scents from the ground.

Xaldin Hound (Galician Hound)

This rare breed originates from Galicia in northwestern Spain and dates back over 600 years. Believed to be a cross between Spanish Pointers and Bloodhounds, Xaldins are distinguished by their wiry coats which come in hues of brown, grey, tawny and black. Weighing approximately 35–45lbs., they make excellent companions who thrive on lots of outdoor exercise and mental stimulation. As long as they get enough attention, they tend to stay close to home.

Xi Jiang Golden Dog (South China Golden Dog)

These loyal, gentle giants originated in China’s Guangdong Province more than 2,000 years ago. Also known as Chinese Temple Dogs, they have thick double coats that come in solid colors such as black, red, yellow and chocolate. This noble breed stands between 22–28 inches tall and weighs anywhere from 50–100 lbs. Due to their strength and courage, South China Goldens were originally bred for guard duty and hunting wild boar. Today however, these dignified dogs excel as devoted pets who love spending time outdoors with their families.

Xarnego Valenciano (Valencian Smooth Hair Hound)

One of the most distinctive members of this list is the Valencian Smooth Hair Hound—a strikingly handsome breed with an exotic appearance. Originating from Valencia in eastern Spain, these lean athletic dogs sport smooth glossy coats which come in four colors: lemon and orange fawns, yellow sables and dark brindles. Ranging from 16–20 inches in height and 25–35 lbs., the Xarnego is renowned for its keen nose and eagerness to please. Despite being relatively rare outside its homeland, they’re gaining popularity amongst pet parents across Europe.

Conclusion

From ancient healing guardians to gentle giant hunters and exuberant scent hounds, there’s plenty of variety when it comes to dog breeds that start with “X.” All of these pooches make wonderful additions to any household — providing unconditional love and joy for years to come!
